Three Signs You Need A New Air Conditioner

Three Signs That Signal You Need a New A/C System

Though you may not believe it, spring will eventually come, and, with it, all the cleaning and prep for ensuring your home is summer-ready. The first thing to consider on your spring to-do list, however, shouldn’t be beating the rugs. At the top of your list should be A/C maintenance and care. Changing the filters, listening to the hum of the system, and ensuring the outdoor area is debris-free are standard spring duties, but you should keep an eye on older systems that might need to be replaced.

When to Replace Your A/C Unit
You may still be shoveling snow off your deck, but cookouts and get-togethers are just around the corner – and you’re going to want a nice, cool house to escape to when your Uncle Frank corners you on the deck, rattling the latest stats of his favorite baseball team. Who invited him, anyway? Be proactive by looking out for these three signs that it’s time to replace your A/C unit so you don’t get stuck in the heat of summer.

It’s Older than Methuselah.
Okay, Methuselah was likely older than 15 years, but if your unit is close
to that or even older, it may be time to consider an update. Though modern air conditioners can usually last longer than 15 years, as they head toward 20, their efficiency lessens, especially in older models. That inefficiency could cause higher utility bills and more money on repairs. Of course, regular maintenance means your A/C will likely withstand the test of time, and your repair person can alert you to potential issues.

A Low SEER Rating.
A/C systems that are older than average are likely to have a lower SEER, or
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This number explains how efficient your system is. Today, the minimum SEER for a new A/C is 13 and the highest in around 25, but older models can have a SEER of 10 or even less. If your system is on the lower end, keep an eye out on its efficiency – lower ratings mean higher bills.

Extra Maintenance.
Some units, whether improperly sized or improperly installed, may cause extra maintenance issues. If you’ve had to call for more-than-average maintenance, this may the case for your unit. Call us for a second opinion on your system to ensure it’s the right size and in the best space. All these issues force your system to work harder than it should – and that could mean an early
replacement.

How to Know for Sure
These are all indicators that your system might need an upgrade or a replacement, but you can’t know until a professional takes a look. Yearly maintenance can ensure your system lasts for the long haul, and having someone who knows your system and can check when things seem off is the best way to know whether it’s time to replace your A/C. If you think it’s time for an update or you’d like to schedule a yearly checkup, contact our team. Our professionals can explain not only when it’s time to change your A/C unit, but they can also help you decide what system would be best for a replacement.
