When Is It Time You Replace Your HVAC Filter?

You’ve heard the reminder to change your HVAC filter. But what happens to your air conditioning unit when life gets in the way, and an extended period of time passes between replacements? At Harker, many of our customers call us for annual service checks and HVAC filter replacements like clockwork, but we’ve seen our fair share of overdue HVAC filters since our founding in 1949. Here is everything you need to know about HVAC filters, how they work and why they need periodic maintenance and replacement.

What Is An HVAC Filter?

The purpose of an HVAC filter is to filter out dust, pollen, pet dander, and other small particles out of the air that would otherwise cause breathing irritation, allergies and even negative health outcomes over the long-term to you and your family. Common materials for HVAC filters are pleated cotton, polyester, and fiberglass.

The location of an HVAC filter can vary based on the unit, but typically are inserted in front of the fan of your HVAC system to block contaminants from entering the airflow.

When Should You Replace An HVAC Filter?

Typically, it is recommended to change your air filter every 3 months. But this blanket statement doesn’t apply to all households and living conditions. There are a number of factors that could affect how many particles your HVAC filter is removing from the air any given day, and therefore affect the recommended frequency of replacement. These factors include:

  • Do you have asthma?
  • Do you have pets?
  • Do you live in a dusty climate?
  • Do you experience severe allergies?
  • Do you live in a large home?

If yes, then you may want to consider your filter more frequently to help ease your symptoms.

How Do I Replace And Install An Air Filter?

Replacing an air filter is easy and you can do it yourself in a few quick steps. First, ensure your HVAC unit is turned off to prevent any dust from escaping the system. Next, remove the old filter from the return air duct of your unit. Finally, replace this old filter with a new one (remember to take off the packaging from your new filter – this reads like an obvious tip, but you’d be surprised!). Repeat this process every 3 months or so to create a comfortable home environment. Finally, make sure you dispose of the old filter and close your HVAC unit before remembering to start it back up again. Give Harker a call and have one of our HVAC technicians change the  filter on your HVAC unit.

What Happens If I Don’t Replace My Air Filter?

If you neglect your air filter, it won’t perform its necessary job. The filter will get clogged and additional contaminants will begin to enter your home. Not only will the dust and particles enter your home, but this will cause increased wear and tear on your HVAC machine. The dust will clog other components of the machine, creating constricted air flow.

What Is The Best Air Filter To Buy?

When considering your purchase of a new air filter, it’s important to consider the size of your HVAC machine. Furthermore, consider the quality of air filter you are purchasing. A HEPA filter stands for “High Efficiency Particulate Air.” These  filters are made of a fine metal mesh that will be more effective, especially for those with severe allergies or who live in a dusty climate.
